GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) - The WIAA girls state basketball tournament begins Thursday with 20 teams set to compete in the tournament and five to be crowned champions.
Assistant Director Kate Peterson Abiad expects thousands to attend. “It is one of the most well-attended [events]. Basketball really draws people and I think this year we have so much talent in this state, that I'm hoping to see lots of people come out,” stated Peterson Abiad.
The tournament tips off at the Resch Center on March 7 and Discover Green Bay President Brad Toll says the community gets an economic boom for hosting the event.
“Typically, it is between 2.1 million and 2.3 million, so there's an impact with our restaurants, hotels, and retail,” explained Toll.
Peterson Abiad says those competing are shooting to put on a show, you don't want to miss it.
“If you look at who's playing here this weekend I think a lot of people will be interested to come out and watch these games. There's going to be some great games with some incredibly talented young women,” said Peterson Abiad.
Tip off is Thursday at 11:35 a.m. at the Resch Center. The tournament concludes Saturday night.
